Thrifty Jail Bait
Dear Adam,
I go to the thrift store often, and recently a very attractive guy started working there. I am strongly attracted to him, and cannot keep my eyes off of him when I go into the store. The only wierd thing is, whenever I look at him, I catch him looking at me. Does this mean he likes me, or does it just mean that he has noticed that I stare and wants to know why I'm staring? I think he's about 19 or 20, and I want to get to know him, but I am incredibly shy around males, and would have no idea how to start up a conversation. Do you have any tips you can give me?

Dear Sam,
It could mean a lot of things including that he thinks you're about to steal something because you're looking around so much. Actually, considering the age difference between the two of you AND because you're still jail bait, that's my answer - one way or another you want to steal something from that store.
You may not take actual goods but you could get him into a lot of trouble. When I was 17 I was a bus boy at this restaurant where older women used to flirt with me ALL the time. It totally sucked. Not because I was 17 but because it was one of those classic Jewish delis and the clientele was mostly in their late 70s and 80s. So, when I said older women I meant OLDER women.
Ah, but then I got smart and left that job to deliver pizzas for Blondie's (classic pizza joint in Berkeley). That job ruled - especially when I delivered pies to the all girl dorms at UCB. Not that anything happened - I was way too nervous and awkward (not nearly as cool as I am now). But I could have gone on forever about the day dreams it left me with.
Anyway, as ready as you feel, you're in no position to discount the effect your age will have when you're underage - even when you're doing the discounting in a thrift shop.
